Ljubljana Travel Guide: A Perfect Day Trip Itinerary from Zagreb

If you’re looking for a charming, walkable European city full of history, culture, and food that feels straight from the farm, Ljubljana, Slovenia should be at the top of your list. We visited as a day trip from Zagreb and were amazed at how much we could see in just one day.

Getting to Ljubljana from Zagreb

We travelled from Zagreb to Ljubljana by FlixBus, and the journey took just 2 hours. Buses arrive at Ljubljana Central Bus Station, conveniently located near the city centre, so you can start exploring on foot right away.

Breakfast in Ljubljana

After arriving, we headed straight to Dunajska Pekarna Slaščičarna, a pastry shop opposite the bus station. Here, we tried a local favourite: kifla, a soft bread roll stuffed generously with cheese. This cheesy breakfast snack is a staple in Ljubljana and a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring. While international chains like McDonald’s and KFC are nearby, I always recommend trying local food spots—it’s one of the best ways to experience a city.

Top Things to Do in Ljubljana in One Day

1. Boat Ride on the Ljubljanica River

Start your sightseeing with a relaxing boat ride down the Ljubljanica River. The trip lasts around 45 minutes and costs about €14. You’ll float past Ljubljana’s bridges and see the city from a completely different perspective.

2. Ljubljana Castle

Next, head up to Ljubljana Castle, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Entry to the castle is about €15. You can either:

  • Walk up the hill (a bit of a workout, but free!)
  • Or take the funicular railway for around €6 return.

The views from the top are spectacular, with sweeping sights across the red rooftops and river.

3. Central Market & Old Town

No visit to Ljubljana is complete without a stroll through the Central Market. From fresh fruits (with bees buzzing around them—proof they’re chemical-free!) to boutique shops and handmade souvenirs, the market is a feast for the senses. The nearby cobbled streets of Old Town are also perfect for wandering, snapping photos, and grabbing a coffee at one of the riverside cafés.

4. Urban Tourist Train (Optional)

If walking isn’t your thing, Ljubljana has a hop-on hop-off tourist train that circles the city’s highlights. We chose to walk, but the train is a great option if you’re short on time or travelling with kids.

5. Dragon Bridge

Finally, don’t miss the famous Dragon Bridge. The dragon is Ljubljana’s symbol, and snapping a photo here is practically a rite of passage for visitors. The statues look fierce and magical, adding to the city’s fairytale vibe.

Day Trip Option: Lake Bled

From Ljubljana’s central bus station, you can also catch direct buses to Lake Bled—one of Slovenia’s most famous destinations. With its emerald-green lake and fairytale island church, it’s the highlight of many people’s Slovenia trips. We didn’t make it this time, but if you have an extra day, it’s worth adding to your itinerary.

Why I Loved Ljubljana

Here’s what stood out most to me about Ljubljana:

  • Compact & walkable – You can see most of the city in one day.
  • Delicious local food – From cheesy kifla to fresh market produce, the food feels natural and healthy.
  • Affordable prices – From boat rides to coffee, Ljubljana won’t break the bank.
  • Charming atmosphere – The cobbled streets, castle views, and iconic dragon bridge make it a city straight out of a storybook.

Practical Travel Tips for Ljubljana

  • Currency: Slovenia uses the Euro (€).
  • Payments: Card payments are accepted almost everywhere, but carry a little cash for markets.
  • Best way to explore: Walking! But taxis and Uber are available if you need them.
  • When to go: Ljubljana is lively year-round, but spring and summer bring outdoor cafés and buzzing markets to life.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re coming from Zagreb like we did or visiting Ljubljana as part of a Slovenia itinerary, this small but stunning capital city makes for a perfect day trip. With castles, markets, riverside cafés, and plenty of charm, Ljubljana is a European gem you won’t soon forget

Have a great day!
