The Multi-stop trip Hack That Let Us Explore Doha without breaking the bank

After a long break from travelling, I felt it was finally time to plan something refreshing — a well-deserved trip with my bestie, Angie. Our main destination was Singapore, but we discovered a little gem through Qatar Holidays: a 2-day stopover in Doha, with hotel accommodation included. It was the perfect way to ease into the journey, and I’m so glad we took it. If you’re flying with Qatar, it’s well worth exploring their stopover options — you can check them out here.

Landing in Doha: Hot, Humid and Full of Surprises

We arrived in June, right in the middle of Doha’s summer heat. The temperature sat at around 35°C (95°F), and it hits you as soon as you step outside. One of the first things we realised — walking is not advisable. Even short distances can be draining in that level of heat, so Uber quickly became our best friend. It’s widely available, reliable, and very affordable.

Our hotel provided a city map with all the main attractions marked out, which was incredibly helpful in shaping our short itinerary. It’s a simple thing, but one I’d highly recommend asking for at the reception.

The Gold Souk: Where Culture Meets Investment

One of our first stops was the Gold Souk, a traditional market filled with everything from fine jewellery to precious metals. This wasn’t just sightseeing — it was part of a financial strategy. A big thank you to Angie, who’s always thinking ahead when it comes to money. She spotted the opportunity to make some smart gold purchases while we were there, and it turned out to be both fun and fruitful.

The Gold Souk is located right next to Souq Waqif, a vibrant cultural market with so much to explore — spices, textiles, perfumes, and plenty of dining options serving delicious local cuisine. We ended up spending a good portion of our day just soaking in the energy of the place, trying different dishes and browsing the stalls.

Museums, Parks and Modern Beauty

Doha’s commitment to arts and culture is clear in the way they present their museums. We were fortunate to visit two very different — and equally impressive — museums during our short stay.

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) was our first cultural stop. The building itself is a statement, but inside, it’s peaceful and beautifully curated. Right next door is MIA Park, a large, green open space with stunning waterfront views. It’s a lovely spot to unwind and take in the skyline.

We also visited the National Museum of Qatar, and if you love modern architecture, you’re in for a treat. Shaped like a desert rose, the building is a visual experience in itself. Inside, it walks you through Qatar’s past, present, and future with beautifully immersive exhibitions. I left with a real appreciation for the country’s heritage and rapid transformation.

Travel & Money Tips

  • Avoid walking outdoors – the heat is intense, even for short distances. Use a taxi service for convenience and comfort.
  • Hotels often provide free maps with major attractions – take one and use it to plan efficiently.
  • Card payments are accepted almost everywhere, making it easy to move around without cash.
  • Travelling from the UK? I recommend using your Monzo card. We had excellent exchange rates, and everything worked seamlessly. You can use my referral code here.

Top 10 Things to Do in Doha (Even on a Short Trip)

  1. Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) – Rich in history and design.
  2. MIA Park – Relaxing and scenic with views of the skyline.
  3. National Museum of Qatar – Visually stunning and deeply informative.
  4. Souq Waqif – Local shopping and traditional food in a lively setting.
  5. Gold Souk – Investment potential and cultural insight.
  6. The Pearl-Qatar – High-end marina living and luxury shopping.
  7. Katara Cultural Village – Home to galleries, restaurants, and beach walks.

This stopover wasn’t just a bonus — it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. It allowed us to slow down, experience something new, and transition into holiday mode with ease. Doha surprised me in the best way: modern yet deeply rooted in culture, welcoming, and very easy to navigate.

Have a great day!
